We’ve all heard the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” However, not many people actually read the autobiography to determine why the cover is the way it is. What’s interesting is that, by the grace of God, we were all given a life—but how we navigate that life looks different for each of us. Some have managed theirs better than others, becoming CEOs in their respective fields, while others had to create their own opportunities from nothing. Some have faced felony charges and failed repeatedly—mistake after mistake. And then some appear to have it all figured out, believing they’ve never stumbled, never failed, never made a wrong turn.
I’m not one of those people. I’ve made some tough decisions in my life—some right, plenty wrong.
I’ve owned multi-million-dollar businesses. I’ve raced in NASCAR, held world records in drag racing, and traveled across the country and parts of the world. I’ve made millions and built relationships with celebrities and very wealthy people.
But I’ve also lost it all. I’ve hit rock bottom. I’ve been homeless. I’ve battled addiction. I’m a high school dropout. I’ve been a victim of gang violence. I’ve fought demons that most people couldn’t imagine. I turned into a racist. I’ve been a felon. I’ve done so much good and bad in my life, more than I can describe in this prologue.
It’s a strange balance. Some call it chaos. Others call it perspective. I call it life—raw, real, and unapologetically mine. I’ve made tough decisions—some that cost me dearly. But through it all, I’ve gained powerful life lessons that taught me to see things differently—to see more clearly. Pain gave me wisdom. Struggle gave me strength. And every setback became a stepping stone.
None of us is perfect. Every one of us carries scars—some visible, most not. That’s why I choose not to judge, and I don’t shame. Because until you’ve walked in someone else’s shoes, you have no idea what they’ve survived just to be here still. I believe in treating people the way you want to be treated—not just when you’re face-to-face, but even when they’re not around. Be real. Be kind. Be human.
Unfortunately, our society has lost much of that, or perhaps even all of it. Too often, people judge what they see on the surface instead of taking the time to understand what’s within. A lot of us fail to understand why the cover is the cover. This is my life packed more into a cover.
But why is it that life hits some harder than others? Our childhoods leave a lasting imprint—they shape us, mold us, sometimes even define us. The things we see, feel, and endure early on can echo throughout our lives.
But we’re not bound by it. We can break the cycle. We can choose a different path. What formed us doesn’t have to define us.
My mother has always tried her hardest—and still does to this day. Her story is nothing short of remarkable. She didn’t have it easy either. Our family wasn’t fed with a silver spoon, far from it.
My childhood was rough. I started making the wrong decisions early in life. Like many others, I didn’t have a father figure around. My biological father walked out when I was just six months old. My mom lost both of her parents before I was even born. I can’t imagine how difficult that must’ve been—19 years old, completely alone, raising a baby. For the most part, it was just the two of us.
The struggle was real. This is my life lesson, learned and packed into more than a cover.
Shortly before I turned one, my mom met the man who would become my stepfather. She eventually married him, and for the next decade, life seemed to be on the right track. My younger brothers and sisters were born, and we had what appeared to be a “normal” home.
But everything changed when I was about 10 years old… That’s when the abuse started. The chaos. The crime. The drugs. The hustle. The crashes. The climb. And somehow—buried in the mess—were flickers of success.
I share these experiences in my motivational book, which is available for pre-order.
